You’re facing a decision, and something inside you says no. Or maybe it says go. Either way, you feel it in your gut. But is that feeling your intuition guiding you, or fear trying to keep you safe? This is one of the most common questions I hear. Intuition and fear can feel remarkably alike at first, because both arrive as a gut reaction. Once you know what to look for, though, they’re surprisingly different. Here are six ways to tell them apart. 1. In your body Intuition feels calm and steady, a quiet sense of settling or expansion. Fear feels tight and tense, like a racing heart or a knot in your stomach. 2. Its voice Intuition speaks in a voice that’s quiet, neutral and kind. Fear is loud, urgent and often harsh. 3. Its focus Intuition stays in the present moment and speaks to what is true right now. Fear lives in the future, spinning an endless loop of “what ifs.” 4. Its message Intuition is simple and clear, often a single word, image or sense of knowing. Fear is complicated and repetitive, full of worst-case stories. 5. How it nudges Intuition is gentle and patient. It returns softly until you listen. Fear applies pressure, demanding that you act right now or freeze in place. 6. After you listen When you follow your intuition, you feel relief and peace, even when the path ahead is hard. When you follow fear, you usually feel more worry, more questions and more noise. Here’s the full comparison at a glance. Save it for the next time you’re unsure which voice to trust: A Quick Check You Can Use Anytime
When you’re not sure what you’re feeling, pause and take three slow breaths. Then ask yourself one simple question: Does this feel like expansion or contraction? Expansion, a sense of openness, ease or quiet yes, usually points to intuition. Contraction, a sense of tightening, bracing or pulling back, usually points to fear. Fear isn’t the enemy. It’s often trying to protect you. Its job isn’t to make your decisions, though. When you learn to recognize fear for what it is, you can thank it, set it aside and listen for the quieter voice underneath. Learning to Trust Your Inner Knowing Telling intuition from fear gets easier with practice, and it’s even easier with support. In my Intuitive Strategic Sessions, we work together to quiet the noise, hear what your inner knowing is really saying and turn that insight into clear, grounded next steps.
